Having been successful in conducting the mega social service project for the past four years, this year would be no exception for the ambitious rotaractors of RCEG. This year our beneficiary would be special children, i.e. mentally retarded and spastic children. This year we are planning to satisfy the needs of two homes for such special children, namely RASA and Samarpana.

RASA

Ramana Sunritya Aalaya Trust- RASA was instituted in October 1989. RASA is a voluntary, non-profit, registered organisation and is working for the benefit of children with special needs. It is managed by a team of selfless, devoted and qualified staff and volunteers.

RASA has been in the field of rehabilitation for the past fourteen years. It has focussed on the application of a unique methodology, resulting in the holistic development of children with special needs. The methodology called Theatre for Holistic Development (THD) is scientifically structured, developmentally focussed and individual specific.

At present RASA’s special school has 80 children/ adults in groups of different levels. As it grows, RASA touches more and more lives. RASA is a unique organization which focuses on the holistic development of each individual through experiences of music, dance, drama, story telling and other aspects of theatre.

Samarpana

Samarpana was established in 1995, with the aim to serve discarded, destitute and orphaned mentally retarded and spastics (multiple handicaps), the neediest in the society. Initially, the organization was based in a rental building with one spastic boy with severe disabilities. Slowly they moved into an own building with 19 special children in 2001.

In 2003, they started a day – care center for extending the services to the special children residing in and around their home. Now, they have 45 mentally retarded and spastics (35 in residential care and 10 in Day – care center). The residents range in age group of 3 to 65 years, all of them discarded by their aged parents, siblings or relatives.

The organization trains them in their day-to-day activities (toilet behaviors, dressing, drinking, eating etc), academics (reading, writing, numbers, time, money, communication etc), vocational skills (candle making, paper bags making, instant sambarani making, greeting cards making, gardening etc).

Appeal

These mentally retarded and spastic children have their own feelings and thoughts!! They are trying to communicate these to us. What are we going to do for them as responsible citizens? It's high time we start thinking and start extending helping hands to these blossoming buds!! Even a penny that we contribute to them would be of prime importance to them as they are in dire need of money to meet their daily expenses!!
