ANNA FM joined hands with the NGO – Vidya Sagar [formerly Spastic Society of India] to work towards the cause of including the differently abled in the mainstream society.
Broadcast every Saturday between 8.00 and 8.30 PM, Muyarchi Thiruvinai Aakum started its inspiring journey on the 31st of July 2004.
The guiding principles and objectives of this programme are:
- To support the cause of the countrywide Disability Movement.
- To educate the community about the science behind disability.
- To provide a forum for the differently abled to voice their views and ideas and a platform to portray their talent and skills.
Over the span of the last four months since its inception a host of issues on disability have been discussed and analyzed through interactive sessions with subject experts. Some of them are:
- Mental Retardation
- Cerebral Palsy with emphasis on the need for early intervention
- Home Management
- Disability Movement
- Inclusion
- Disability Laws
- Community based Rehabilitation
The highlights of the series were the programmes that had the special children of Vidya Sagar exhibit their talent through a three part series on Vidya Sagar’s annual cultural fest “Vikasa”. As a children’s day special, students of Vidya Sagar came over to ANNA FM for a healthy chat session.
Muyarchi Thiruvinai Aakum has also had parents of differently abled share their experience in bringing up their kids through an emotional maze from denial to acceptance. Interviews with special educators on the kind of training they undergo to serve special students with varied abilities also form a part of this project.
In all, the programme has over the days strengthened its support for a spectrum of causes towards disability. With more plans up its sleeves, Muyarchi Thiruvinai Aakum keeps it going by reflecting the motto of Vidya Sagar – “to be positive and proactive”.
